Pomegranate Health Benefits

A new study has shown that drinking pomegranate juice frequently is extremely beneficial in fighting the hardening of arteries (atherosclerosis). It reduces the oxidation of bad LDL cholesterol which contributes to artery clogging and hardening. The pomegranate juice does not only do significantly reduce in the blood vessel damage. It is found to actually reverse the progression of this disease. Pomegranate has been gaining popularity for menopausal symptoms due to the increased risk of breast cancer, heart disease and strokes from artificial hormone replacement therapy.

Pomegranate Anti-Cancer Agent

Scientific research is demonstrating that pomegranate may be helpful in the prevention and treatment of various types of cancer such as breast cancer, skin cancer, prostate cancer and lung cancer. Pomegranates are the richest source of a natural substance called ellagic acid. According to master herbalist and certified nutritionist Donald Yance in his book Herbal Medicine, Healing and Cancer, ellagic acid “inhibits cancer formation and is believed to inhibit cancer mutation by latching onto DNA-masking sensitive sites on the genetic material that might otherwise be occupied by harmful chemicals. Ellagic acid is particularly effective in the inhibition of lung cancer caused by tobacco.”

Consumption Tips

When buying pomegranates, choose those that are heavy and without splits on its skin. When stored in the fridge, this fruit can keep for as long as six months, but again, consider eating them fresh. To open a pomegranate, first cut off its ‘crown’, then break it into its pre-formed sections. Roll off the arils (fleshy, usually brightly colored cover of a seed, arising from the hilum or funiculus) with your fingers, and collect them all in a bowl. The arils and seeds within them are edible. Put these through your juicer to extract the juice. Eating the seeds (those in the centre of the sacs) is a personal choice. If you are comfortable eating them, they can be a good source of fiber for you.

Precautions

Pomegranate safety concerns can include allergic reactions and potential drug interactions. Also, pomegranates can lower blood pressure, which may be a problem for people who already have low blood pressure.
